The BP Oil Spill: How You Can Help

 BP Oil Spill

It is alarming to see the results of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on the region’s people and environment. I actually cringe every time I hear the news and see the photos of coastal residents, wildlife and the ocean being hampered by the spill. This unfortunate incident, however, provides us all with an opportunity to make a difference. Below are some things that we can do to help with the oil disaster.

1. Donate Hair
Yes hair. But not only hair; fur, fleece, feathers and nylons are also being contributed. The Matter of Trust organization is accepting these items so that booms can be created to soak up the oil from the spill.Dawn Saving Wildlife

2. Shop
More and more organizations are donating proceeds from the sale of products and services to the oil relief effort. Your purchase can be as simple as buying Dawn dishwashing liquid online that helps clean wildlife or sporting a trendy Kenneth Cole T-Shirt where 100% of the net profits are donated to support the clean-up effort. Please be sure to validate each organization before making a purchase.Kenneth Cole I Clean up Well TShirt

3. Vacation in the area
With summer officially here, now marks a great time to plan or continue with a vacation in one of the gulf states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and/or Florida. These states are filled with beautiful coastlines and restaurants. Spending dollars there will contribute to the survival of the residents and our overall economy. A vacation is also a great excuse to wear one of the vibrant colored handbags, belts or accessories from the Linea Pelle collection.

4. Be creative
From accessing state websites which enable online volunteering, to a good old fashioned bake sale to raise funds for a relief organization, the list of things that can be done to help out in this oh so urgent situation, is limitless.Ocean BP Oil Spill

Color Me Summer

Monday, June 28th, 2010

- Meghan D.

For me, summer is all about color. It’s the season you can play with bright, neon and punchy accessories before your wardrobe becomes Fall-infused with less skin and more browns, blacks and grays. In the spirit and celebration of summer color, here are my top picks for colorful additions to your summertime look!

Chartreuse Golden Goddesses

For a burst of color, chartreuse has become a fast favorite in the wardrobe and I love that Linea Pelle is making their latest Dylan bag, perforated to perfection, in a bright lime.

Dylan Perforated Shoulder Bag

VIX’s swimsuits are a favorite of mine and I love this bright and bold Tanga suit for being really unique and a huge pop of color. Can’t you just picture how amazing this suit will look alongside water this summer?

Sunset Twisted Bandeau & Sunset Tanga

If you often tend to shy away from color, invest in a pair of yellow sandals. Yellow compliments so many of its neighbors in ROYGBIV and when set against solids, it’s a welcomed splash in your wardrobe.

Ray Ban just launched a new line, Rare Prints, and they’re all kinds of funky. I’m totally lusting after this pastel multi-color stripped pair of wayfarers. They are a perfect punch to an outfit and god knows I love me some sunglasses.

RB2143 Wayfarer II

If ever there were the summer color, I’d have to say first place goes to orange. Point in case: the Hayden-Harnett Vesuvius Tie cuff in Poppy. This adds an “instant kapow” that you can wear around your wrist or even around your ankle.

Show Candy You Care: June – National Candy Month

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

- Allison N.

Candy Pile

It’s an integral part of nearly every holiday celebration – from Hanukkah to Easter to Halloween. We show friends and family love with giant boxes of the stuff. When we’re down or need a boost, we (I can’t be the only one) eat heaps of it. Still I’m troubled. It’s always about “us” when it comes to the sweet stuff. I wonder – how do you show appreciation to candy itself?

It just so happens that June is National Candy Month, so what better time to show a little love and devotion to our favorite hunks of sugar?Candy Thermomter

One of my favorite ways to show my love for candy is to get my hands dirty and make it from scratch. The more candy you make yourself the more addictive it gets. Just about anyone can make candy with a few ingredients, a $5 candy thermometer and a pot. There’s plenty of room for disaster when you’re melting sugar into molten globs of deliciousness, but the ingredients are so cheap that it’s OK to fail every now and then.

One of my first candy making endeavors was Fleur de Sel Caramels. After slaving over a pot of amber colored, bubbly goo for what seemed like hours, I ended up with a heartbreaking chunk of caramel that was harder than platinum. I’m sure it would have tasted great if I had teeth made of steel! I think the failure is all part of the fun with candy, and when I succeeded the next day, victory was all the more sweet. Literally!

Fleur de Sel Caramels

The most foolproof candy you can make is marshmallows, and they are SO worth it. You can flavor them with just about anything or coat them in chocolate, nuts, peppermint or coconut, just to name a few. With a quick search, you can find thousands of recipes for simple variations online.

So show candy you care this month. Eat it for no reason other than it’s there, it’s delicious and it never, ever judges you. If you’re feeling adventurous try to make it yourself, and you’ll be glad you did! Just remember – moderation is key – don’t hold candy or me responsible if you gain 15 pounds by July 1st.

Well Suited

- Mrs. Kitten Couture

There is not much that I do not absolutely love about summer. The BBQ’s, the vacations and the fact that my skin is no longer the color of a dairy product. However, summer 2010 also coincides with months 5, 6, and 7 of my first pregnancy. So, while I will be sitting on the skimpy-swimwear sidelines, I am going to need you ladies to work it in my honor in the fabulous swimwear trends available this year.

If the thought of putting on a two piece makes you want to dive head first into the kiddie pool, stay calm and cool knowing the slimming elements that you love about Spanx shape-wear is now available for swimwear! This color blocked one piece creates a defined waist and sucks you in so you look super slender.

Spandex Structured One Piece

If you are feeling a little more daring, sexy slashes are surfacing this season. While you get the comfort of a one-piece, you get the added sex appeal of a two piece with strategically placed peek-a-boos. While this suit is not for the timid, it is sure to add a little heat no matter what the temperature.

Slashed Cutout One Piece (2)

If you are up for a challenge, nothing is sexier than a stark white bikini. Opt for options that work with your silhouette. For the top heavy, choose a halter for better support, if you are wanting to add some northern oomph, try a bandeau. But, be sure to triple check that the suit is well lined when opting for a light colored bikini. I had an unfortunate incident with a light yellow bikini that the pool goers are still talking about…you’ve been warned.

White Bikini

While I will be expanding by the pool this year, I am happy to say I will join you again in summer 2011. Until then, make me proud in the fabulous swimwear options available for 2010.

Summer Beauty Trends

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

- Meghan D.

My favorite time of year when it comes to makeup and skincare is summer. You get to stash away the heavier eye shadows, dark lipsticks and nail polishes and really reveal your own skin. Even better? Your makeup and skin really get the chance to glow!

So here’s the skinny on some summer beauty trends I think you should give a shot:

Protect the face:L'Oreal Active Daily Moisture

Summer lets you be laid back when it comes to your beauty routine, but it is also the time to make your skin a priority with sunscreen. A personal favorite facial lotion of mine that includes SPF 15 is L’Oreal Daily Active moisturizer.

Perfect pink lip:

Maybelline landed a real winner when they introduced their new Color Sensational Lipcolor at New York Fashion Week back in February. This creamy and rich product made me a believer in lipstick again. Their ‘Make Me Pink’ shade is perfect for summer and goes great as a base layer before adding a sheer gloss. Did I mention that it lasts for hours and hours?

Bright eyes:

Benefit Eye Bright Pencil

You know that great wide-eyed look that Blake Lively always flaunts as Serena Van Der Woodsen in Gossip Girl? Well you can get it easily too and there’s no time like this season! Just draw small v’s on the inner corner of each eye with Benefit Cosmetics’ Eye Bright pencil and you’ll be looking wide awake and summer-y in no time!

Get cheeky:

I’m a fan of switching up your blushes here and now to add an extra dimension to your face. My favorite year-round blush color is Benefit’s Posietint. Once you’ve put the stain on your cheek, layer a poppy peach color over them and at the top of your forehead. I recommend NARS’ Amour blush which is a fabulous peachy/pink shade. You’ll be flaunting this season’s perfect face color as though you were gracing the pages of a magazine.

Before you know it,  you’ll be showing face! And may I suggest these darling Linea Pelle cosmetic cases in the exact colors of your hot summer look?

LP Launches Product Videos

- Janellica Ohanian, stylist for Handbago.com

ShopFlick-On-LP

As a celebrity fashion stylist, I’m eternally on a mission to apprehend fashion forward designer clothes, shoes, handbags, and accessories in a limited time frame. In addition to this time constraint, I’m responsible for researching and shopping for a cohesive fashion story that will not only please the client but the photographer, the PR representative, the manager, the producer, and the editor. Talk about some serious pressure!  Therefore, I considerably rely on the Internet to conduct my research when prepping for any photo shoot or personal shopping appointment. This can be a tedious challenge and a gamble when placing your confidence on product images that are frequently enhanced to entice consumers to purchase online.  Luckily for fashionistas on a mission like you and me, Linea Pelle is revolutionizing their online store featuring new product videos along with their product images.

These 10-25 seconds of video GENIUS are an invaluable tool (especially to a stylist like me) when researching any potential in-store or online purchases like your next Linea Pelle investment piece. Basically, they provide consumers a unique and personal online shopping experience featuring in depth product detail descriptions and exclusive styling tips from a Linea Pelle Stylist. The videos also function as a helpful extension of the product images already online, which allows you to participate in a progressive form of online shopping leading to confident online purchases. Overall, this virtual video concept is about saving you time/money and easing the frustration that usually comes from online shopping. Most of us can surely attest to not being fully satisfied with a recent online purchase (i.e. that cute vintage dress that looked amazing on the model but is awkwardly too big/too small for you and is now sitting in your closet collecting dust.)  Now is a time for change, so be the first to take advantage of this AVANT-GARDE approach to shopping because the new trend of product videos is taking the World Wide Web by storm and are definitely here to stay. Whether you are an avid Linea Pelle fan or a celebrity fashion stylist, you will definitely benefit and love the LP product videos. They officially launch this week so check them out today at www.lpcollection.com!

 Xoxo, keep it vogue!

We All Squee For Glee

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

- Ilan G.

Is it even possible to say the word “glee” anymore without it being 100% associated to the latest television sensation?  Remember when it was just a noun? For anyone wondering how a show has managed to reach so much success in such a short amount of time, the answer is in the definition: Glee (n) – Jubilant delight; joy; great merriment.

No matter what age, gender, race or mood you are in, there is a music style out there for you.  Angry? Happy? Tired? To borrow a slightly rephrased line from Steve Jobs over at Apple Headquarters, “there’s a sound for that.”

We don’t only tune in for the music though. We also see a beautiful cast of faces and a very forward wardrobe department. Lady Gaga episode, I’m looking at you. If you’re anything like me, the second you see something you love, you HAVE to have it. Or at the very least, recreate it. Cheaply. I’m not a famous actor. I don’t have your money, Quinn Fabray. Although I don’t recommend leaving your house in a cheerleader uniform everyday, there are some other great looks you can nab that will make you look current and fresh.

Quinn FabrayThis is my latest must have ensemble. Not only are the fabrics and colors light and breathable for summer, but the pieces would be easy to find anywhere! Men’s button down shirts have become really popular and have slowly started taking over my closet.  The greatest thing about them is that they can be found anywhere your budget allows – thrift stores, Forever21, Neiman’s, etc. As the months get warmer, it’s time to retire the plaid flannels and swap them out for lighter colors. Now I know there’s probably some rule about white pants, but I think if done correctly, they can look GREAT! Just be careful where you sit and make sure nobody is waiting to slushy you in the face. I’d imagine that would be a tough stain to attack.

Want to get the look yourself? I particularly enjoy this cotton tunic from J.Crew that is lightweight and feminine and these white denim cropped jeans from The Gap.

J.Crew Lightweight Cotton tunic topCropped skinny jeans white wash

I am absolutely terrible at styling my hair. Luckily for me, braids are also my new favorite thing! They’re super simple and the messier they are the better it looks. To finish the ensemble off, I’d pair this outfit with a cute twisty look. Despite what Chinese culture may tell us, this is definitely the Year of the Braid.

Quinn Fabray with Braid

But now what would I wear for Homecoming?? Rachel Berry has the schoolgirl wardrobe down, but Lea Michele has a fun style that relates to me a little more than the plaid skirt/sweater vest set. She is the owner of a French Connection dress I have wanted ever since I saw her wearing it. Not to overuse clichés (glee-chés, if you will) but between the dress, the heels and the red lips…I think she deserves her signature gold star for this outfit.

Lea MichelePostella Nancy One-Shoulder Dress

Her dress is probably out of my price range, so I was excited when I found this Postella “Nancy” One-Shoulder Dress at Dillards for a similar look and a reasonable price. It’s a cute, bright and young look that can work for multiple occasions. I bet this dress would catch a few glances from Finn Hudson. A girl can dream…

MTV Movie Awards 2010

- Fashion Fabulous

Christina Aguilera

I recently had the opportunity to experience one of the most entertaining award shows: the MTV Movie Awards. While sitting in the audience I experienced everything from tears to laughter. This is an award show that encompasses entertainment at its best.

Aziz

Comedian and award show host, Aziz Ansari, brought comedy to the show with his comical skits and “swagger,” while side kick Tom Cruise transformed into his alter-ego Les Grossman and brought down the house with a musical performance with none other than J. Lo herself performing “Get Right.”

Sandra Bullock A variety of extremely talented and successful actors and actresses walked the stage to accept their well deserved awards. While most of their speeches were short, sweet and to the point, there were some that brought a tear to eyes of several audience members. One of those heartfelt moments was when Sandra Bullock accepted her generation award. She graced us all with a speech about her appreciation to be in the entertainment industry while also addressing inaccurate rumors. Another enjoyable moment was when Ken Jeong danced to the stage for the “Best WTF Moment” award. He mentioned a special and tearful thank you to supporters of his wife’s health during her fight to conquer breast cancer. He ended with his signature “Too-doo-lou” chant from The Hangover.

russell and katyAs if that weren’t enough, I was fortunate enough to witness musical performances by Katy Perry singing her hot new single “California Girls” and Christina Aguilera performing “Bionic.”

With all of this excitement, I was barely prepared for the star-studded after party. Some of the attendants included; Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Justin Brescia, Frankie Delgado, Audrina Patridge, Miike Snow, Russell Brand and Katy Perry. The after party performance by Miike Snow was also pretty amazing! Overall, I rate this event a 10 for its diversity and entertainment – watch it on MTV.com!
