It is alarming to see the results of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on the region’s people and environment. I actually cringe every time I hear the news and see the photos of coastal residents, wildlife and the ocean being hampered by the spill. This unfortunate incident, however, provides us all with an opportunity to make a difference. Below are some things that we can do to help with the oil disaster.
1. Donate Hair
Yes hair. But not only hair; fur, fleece, feathers and nylons are also being contributed. The Matter of Trust organization is accepting these items so that booms can be created to soak up the oil from the spill.
2. Shop
More and more organizations are donating proceeds from the sale of products and services to the oil relief effort. Your purchase can be as simple as buying Dawn dishwashing liquid online that helps clean wildlife or sporting a trendy Kenneth Cole T-Shirt where 100% of the net profits are donated to support the clean-up effort. Please be sure to validate each organization before making a purchase.
3. Vacation in the area
With summer officially here, now marks a great time to plan or continue with a vacation in one of the gulf states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and/or Florida. These states are filled with beautiful coastlines and restaurants. Spending dollars there will contribute to the survival of the residents and our overall economy. A vacation is also a great excuse to wear one of the vibrant colored handbags, belts or accessories from the Linea Pelle collection.
4. Be creative
From accessing state websites which enable online volunteering, to a good old fashioned bake sale to raise funds for a relief organization, the list of things that can be done to help out in this oh so urgent situation, is limitless.

As if that weren’t enough, I was fortunate enough to witness musical performances by Katy Perry singing her hot new single “California Girls” and Christina Aguilera performing “Bionic.”
