In 1820, the first Fourth of July celebration was held in Eastport, Maine which still remains the largest in the state. The celebration of our nation’s independence continues to this day and is often marked with family picnics, barbeques and other popular outdoor activities like fireworks. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to keep your Fourth of July weekend fun and festive YET safe:
Do:
Enjoy a local firework display
Don’t:
Organize a dangerous and illegal backyard display. Many adults and children end up in the emergency room due to the mishandling of explosive devices!
Do:
Pig out on homemade eats
Don’t:
Eat any potato or macaroni salad that’s been sitting in the sun too long!
Do:
Have fun in the sun
Don’t:
Let yourself, your children or your pets suffer from heatstroke. Please remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen!
Do:
Practice crowd safety techniques
Don’t:
Allow children to wander away from you. Being that children are naturally inquisitive, they are prone to roaming away if left unattended, especially with all the festivities and excitement going on.
Do:
Travel Light
Don’t:
Carry a huge backpack. Many locally organized fireworks displays will have security check points before allowing you to take your spot. Ladies, switch to a smaller handbag like LP’s Dylan Perforated Disco Clutch!
