Outdoor Fun in the LA Sun

- Ilan G.

Now that it’s summer, it’s time to enjoy the beautiful weather California has to offer. As good as it may sound to stay inside with the AC blasting; I think instead, it’s time to take full advantage of the City of Angels. We are lucky because there are so many things available to us. We are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from beaches, campsites, hiking trails, amusements parks, etc.

Concerts in the Park

If anyone grew up in the valley (like myself), you might have heard about the “Concerts in the Park” that are put on at the Warner Center Park in Woodland Hills. Although it’s no Hollywood Bowl, anyone from cover bands to well-known orchestras are featured…and it’s FREE! All you really need is a blanket, some good company and a sweater for when things cool down. I always pack a little picnic, but for the full experience there are several vendors selling all types of food and goodies around the park. I ate nearly two full funnel cakes once, but don’t judge me. Visit their website for a full calendar of events.

Twilight Dance Series (2)

For those of you that have an allergic reaction to anything in the valley but still want to enjoy some outdoor music, Santa Monica also has free concerts on the pier every Thursday night where you can dance your heart out on the beach. For a full list of their Twilight Dance Series this summer, visit their website too!

  Hike the Hollywood Hills

Another great outdoor activity is hiking the Hollywood Hills. Not only is it also free, but an excellent way to stay healthy and in shape. Runyon Canyon has quickly become a popular place and it’s relatively easy for those of you that felt winded just reading the word ‘hike’ (me). Plus, once you start making your way up to the top, there are breathtaking views. I suggest going on a clear day to avoid as much smog as possible. Be sure to take some friends and a light camera as there are some beautiful pictures to be had at the top. Then you have all the bragging rights AND the proof, when you put it up on facebook…(and I know you will).

Disneyland

My last suggestion may have people digging into their pockets, but it’s the place where dreams come true! Disneyland is my all-time favorite outdoor activity because it is the perfect mix of celebration, nostalgia and whimsy. Although, not a cheap excursion (tickets, food, parking and souvenirs add up), it is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. There are rides for everyone, all sorts of delicious candy, Mickey ears for all and indoor rides for when the summer sun is just a BIT too much to handle. One note of caution: be careful choosing when to go since the summer months bring lots of crowds.

World of Color

Another great reason to visit the park this summer is the new attraction “World of Color” at California Adventure. It is a new water/light show that will awe and amaze. I have yet to see it since it is brand new, but I have heard nothing but great things. If Disney knows how to do anything, it’s how to put on a show. As you can see from the picture above, it looks pretty gorgeous. The wonderful thing about visiting the mouse is both children and adults leave happy. So grab some friends and make a memory.
